Energisers For Conferences & Meetings

Written by Aaron Betesta

Laughtercise Owner & Facilitator of Fun

My name is Aaron and I would love to support you on your energy mission πŸ’₯

Because we’ve all been there haven’t we? Sat down at a conference or meeting trying not to fall asleep πŸ’€

And if you’re planning a meeting or conference, the last thing you want is your audience to fall asleep!

But look at you. You’re being proactive. You’re organising a meeting or conference and you’re researching energisers. You know how important it is to energise everyone (rather than hear them snoring).

I like you already. Give yourself a pat on the back βœ…

Why am I qualified to give you advice about energisers?

⚑ Ready to be energised? ⚑

⭐ Top tips to energise a group ⭐

Let’s start with three simple and creative ideas for energising groups at meetings or conferences:

πŸ“ Use music. If you don’t utilise music, you’ll miss an opportunity (a very easy opportunity) to energise your group. Upbeat music, with a high tempo, is the best music to use as our neutrons fire in synchrony to the beat, which means happy music has an energising effect. According to recent research, music triggers the hormones oxytocin and serotonin, responsible for bonding and trust. As people enter your conference or meeting (and leave for breaks), pop some music on. Music is energy!

πŸ“ Mix things up.Β Don’t give everyone death by PowerPoint. If you want to watch an hilarious video about how not to use PowerPoint, check out this video by comedian Don McMillan. Have presentations and PowerPoint slides, but mix things up by inserting elements like video segments, brainstorming sessions and speeches from motivational speakers.

πŸ“ Get everyone on their feet. Research shows that exercise helps strengthen memory, aids concentration and – most importantly – increases energy levels. We’re not saying to get everyone doing burpees and sprints around the room, but shaking everyone’s senses up is a great idea to increase energy.

Conference Energisers

Great examples of conference energisers are activities like ‘Drawing Ahead’, ‘Heads or Tails’, ‘7,6,5,4,3,2,1’ and some ‘Seated Yoga’. These energisers have been tired and tested on thousands of conference attendees. They are designed for one thing…to energise!! ⚑

Instructions to all activities below πŸ‘‡

Drawing Ahead!

Fancy getting everyone to put a paper plate on their head and attempt to draw a picture?

This is a brilliant and bitesize conference energiser idea that can take less than 5 minutes if you prepare well. It will create a huge amount of feel-good and energy in your audience:

You will need:

πŸ“ 1 paper plate (or piece of card) and 1 pen per person (you can place them under everyone’s chair to save time)

Instructions:

πŸ“ Step 1 – Instruct everyone to put their paper plate on their headΒ

πŸ“ Step 2 – Instruct everyone to draw a picture on the paper plate. You can pick what picture they draw. Maybe you’re talking about customer care and you can get everyone to draw a smiling customer. Or if it’s Easter, get them to draw an Easter egg

πŸ“ Step 3 – Instruct everyone to write their name underneath their drawing

πŸ“ Step 4 – Give them 1 minute and get them to draw!

πŸ“ Step 5 – After 1 minute, ask everyone to remove the plate and show to everyone around themΒ

This is what your audience will look like playing this game πŸ‘‡

Heads or Tails?

This game is as simple as it gets for facilitation. It’s a great little activity to get everyone on their feet and it also creates a bit of competition.

You will need:

πŸ“ A coin (ideally a large coin like a 2p or 50p)

Instructions:

πŸ“ Step 1 – Get everyone standing up

πŸ“ Step 2 – Instruct everyone that you will be flipping a coin in the air. Tell them that, as it’s flipping, if you think it’ll land on heads, put your hands on your head. If you think tails, put your hand on your bottom. If you get it right, keep standing. If you get it wrong, sit down

πŸ“ Step 3 – Keep flipping until only one person is standing! (for large groups it will take longer)

7,6,5,4,3,2,1!

This activity requires a confident facilitator, but the impact will be well worth it! Check out a team doing this activity in a Laughtercise Corporate Wellbeing WorkshopΒ πŸ‘‡

You will need:

πŸ“ Nothing!

Instructions:

πŸ“ Step 1 – Get everyone standing up

πŸ“ Step 2 – Instruct everyone that you will be shaking off each limb and saying ‘7,6,5,4,3,2,1’ as you do it

πŸ“ Step 3 – Instruct everyone that after ‘7,6,5,4,3,2,1’ you’ll only do ‘6,5,4,3,2,1’ and so on right down to just ‘1’ for each limb!

This is the smiles and energy that this activity creates πŸ‘‡

Seated Yoga

Why not add some mindfulness and gentle exercise to your conference? That would surely energise the mind and body. Double whammy. We even have a 10-minute follow along session that you can utilise πŸ‘‡

Team Meeting Energisers

Great examples of team meeting energisers are activities like ‘Switch Hands’, ‘Drawing Ahead’ and some challenging opposite games to energise minds! These energisers are fun, different and creative.

Instructions to all activities below πŸ‘‡

Switch Hands!

This game will challenge and reinvigorate brain cells! How fast can you switch?? πŸ‘πŸ‘ˆ

Written and video instructions below πŸ‘‡

You will need:

πŸ“ Nothing! This game can be played anytime and anywhere!

Instructions for first activity:

πŸ“ Get everyone to do a ‘thumb up’ with their right hand

πŸ“ Get everyone to point their left index finger at their ‘thumb up’

πŸ“ Switch hands! Do ‘thumb up’ on left hand and index finger pointing with right hand

πŸ“ Keep switching! It’s harder than it sounds!

Instructions for second activity:

πŸ“ Get everyone to do the ‘perfect’ sign with their right hand

πŸ“ Get everyone to do the ‘perfect’ sign with their right hand AND a ‘peace’ sign with their left hand

πŸ“ Switch hands!

πŸ“ Keep switching! It’s harder than it sounds!

Check out a team of nurses playing this game and see the laughter it creates πŸ‘‡

Laughtercise Opposites Game

Now this game takes a bit of facilitation, but it’s a brilliant energiser idea for team meetings! The beauty of this game is that you can keep coming back to it throughout your meeting. You give commands and everyone has to do the opposite command. The nurses below are doing level 4 of our opposites game where clap/click and hoho/haha are opposite. Sounds a bit mad huh? But it works a right treat πŸ‘‡

You will need:

πŸ“ Nothing!

Instructions:

πŸ“ Step 1 – Instruct everyone that when you say ‘clap’, they have to clap. When you say ‘click’, they have to click

πŸ“ Step 2 – Make it opposite!

πŸ“ Step 3 – Add in ‘Move’ and ‘Freeze’. When you say ‘move’, everyone has to get dancing (get some music on!). When you say ‘freeze’, they have to freeze. But the ‘clap’ and ‘click’ remain opposite!

πŸ“ Step 4 – Make it opposite! Everything becomes opposite!

This is the smiles and energy that this activity creates in our sessions πŸ‘‡

FAQs: Conference & Meeting Energisers

How do you energise a group?

The best way to energise a group is to pick some Team Building Activities that give your team the chance to smile and have fun! 😁

Because, whether at a conference or a meeting, it is rather difficult to energise a group. Why? Because most meetings and conferences involve a lot of sitting. And listening. All in a nicely heated room. Add in 50 PowerPoint slides and you’ve got the ideal snooze situation πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

If your audiences mental energy is low, what is said will – most likely – be forgotten.

And then the whole purpose of the conference or meeting is lost.

How do you energise at a conference?

The best way to energise at a conference is to add activities that shakes everyone’s senses up. The most effective mentality towards conference energisers is this… they achieve a goal. The goal is to increase concentration and energy levels. It’s easy to slip into the mentality of ‘energisers will take up precious time that we could use for presentations’. But what is the point of presenting information if everyone’s energy levels are low and nothing gets remembered? And conference energisers only have to last 5-minutes anyway. Would you sacrifice 5 minutes for a significant increase in concentration levels from your audience…?Β

At several points, you almost want to do the opposite of what everyone has been doing in the conference.

Have there been lots of spoken presentations? Add in video segments ⚑

Has everyone been sitting down for a long period? Get them standing up for 5-minutes to do an activity ⚑

Has the room been dark for a long time? Put the lights on and do an activity ⚑

How do you energise a meeting?

The best way to energise a meeting is to add activities that help break up the different sections of the meeting. The most effective mentality towards meeting energisers is this… they achieve a goal. The goal is to increase concentration and energy levels. It’s easy to slip into the mentality of ‘energisers will take up precious time that we could use for presentations’. But what is the point of presenting information if everyone’s energy levels are low and nothing gets remembered? And you only have to have 5-minute energisers for meetings anyway. Would you sacrifice 5-10 minutes for a significant increase in concentration levels?Β

How do you energise a virtual meeting?

The energising requirement doesn’t stop just because it’s virtual; if anything, it’s more important! The best way to energise a virtual meeting is to crack open the team building activities and give your team the chance to smile and have fun! Why would you add fun into a virtual meeting? Why WOULDN’T you?! Increased energy, team bonding, enhanced wellbeing, the list could go on and on.
